When was the last time you checked the UPS battery?
05 October 2023
There are not a few who trust a UPS for the security and trouble-free operation of the computer and peripherals in their office. Thanks to this device, we are sure that the possible voltage fluctuations of the network will not affect the sensitive electronics of our computer and screen, and we will also be able to complete our work, even in conditions of power failure.
Of course, without approaching the autonomy levels of a laptop, the built-in battery of a UPS gives us several minutes of operation (from 10 minutes to over an hour), to finish or even save what we have open. This duration depends both on the size of the UPS battery and on the amount of energy consumption by the computer and connected devices.
Over time the UPS battery degrades in performance, until at some point it is practically non-existent. Usually the average user finds it "suddenly", when the autonomy offered by the UPS drops from almost an hour to... a few seconds!
To prevent unpleasant situations like the one above, it is good - at least once a year - to check the state of our battery! Doing so can be as easy as pressing the button that starts the checking process, especially on more expensive models.
In the event that there is no such button on your UPS, it is very likely that the manufacturer has provided for a corresponding software solution, especially if there is a connection between the UPS and the computer via a USB cable. There, you simply run the program you find and download from the support section of the manufacturer's site, simply following the instructions.
Regardless of the model, the control process can always be done manually by simply unplugging the UPS, while you have the connected devices open. It goes without saying that you don't have the most important files on your disk open at that moment, just as it goes without saying that all the necessary devices you have (monitor and speakers) are working.
Logically, with the drop in voltage, the warning sound from the UPS will start to be heard, informing the whole office or even the whole floor :-) that your computer is now running on battery and must be shut down as soon as possible. There you simply endure the noise, noting only after how many minutes its frequency and timbre will change (usually when the battery voltage drops below 25% of its normal value). At that point you shut everything down and put the ups back on.
All we keep is the time that passed until our battery was discharged to a large extent and it is evaluated in relation to: The time announced by the manufacturer for the specific model, The total consumption of the connected devices in relation to the specifications of the ups.
In general, time under 5 minutes practically means that it is time to replace the battery, which becomes 100% certain if the time is a few seconds. There, the ups simply only takes up space, since the protection it offers to fluctuating voltages is called into question.
At Standard Batteries we have a complete range of batteries for every use and capacity, which will give you economical and reliable options for your every need! Just be careful not to overdo it on the controls and completely drain the ups battery many times, we will meet sooner than we should!
